Sharpening snips on the Rapid Edge machine

Who are we?

Our founder, Robert McInnes, apprenticed as a fitter turner machinist back in the day, and later re-trained as a mechanical design engineer. More recently, Rob travelled to the US to train on the Rapid Edge machine (shown here) with its inventor, Roger Kaye.

Rob has worked with quality tools all his life, and takes great satisfaction in enabling them to be used for their intended purpose, for as long as possible.

Frequently asked questions

Q. What is the difference between honing and sharpening?

A. Sharpening removes material from the blade to produce a new, sharp edge, while honing keeps the blade sharp by pushing the edge of the knife back to the centre. Knife sets often come with a honing rod which should be used regularly.

Q. Can I post my items to you for sharpening by Selwyn Knife & Blade?

A. Yes, though I do prefer drop off.

Postage to Selwyn Knife & Blades is at your cost and risk; return courier is also tracked and insured at your cost.

Q. I own an inexpensive knife set. Is it worth having them sharpened?

A. Yes, even inexpensive knives are worth sharpening. Any knife sharpened by Selwyn Knifes & Blades will be as good as or better than new.

Not only would it be difficult to replace most knives for less than that, we believe it is better for our planet to extend the life of tools and utensils.

Q. How often do I need to sharpen my knives?

A. Whenever you feel your knives are not cutting as well as you would want them to. Japanese chefs sharpen their knives daily!

We generally recommend sharpening every 1 to 3 months for home use, but this varies with usage, maintenance, storage, and the hardness of the steel.

Q. Do you sharpen ceramic or serrated blades?

A. No, not at this time. Perhaps in future!

Q. Can I request custom sharpening on a blade?

A. Yes, we can customize the cutting edge to your specifications, however there may be an additional charge.
